Islington Museum is pleased to present a selection of writings from the published works of playwright and former Islington resident Joe Orton (1933-67). Actor Chris Millington and colleagues will read passages from some of Ortons well-known and not so well-known works. This includes segments from the rarely presented Up Against It, a screenplay written by Orton in 1967 for The Beatles. It was never filmed by the group, possibly due to the Fab Fours management feeling uneasy about John, Paul, George and Ringo portraying cross-dressing, adulterous murderers! Our evening also delves into the letter-writing world of Edna Welthorpe, an alter-ego created by the playwright, as well as the 'Joe Orton Diaries'; the entries offer a fascinating and often explicit insight into Orton's world and his life with partner Kenneth Halliwell. 'Up Against It' is suitable for aged 16 years and over. This event is part of the Up Against It: Islington 1967 a history of gay men in Islington exhibition at Islington Museum (until 21 October 2017) and Islington's Pride LGBT+ Archive Project.
