Over the Rainbow: Money, Class and Homophobia - An afternoon in conversation with Nicola Fields
Manchester on 24 Sep - 14:00

Nicola Fields groundbreaking book, Over the Rainbow: Money, Class and Homophobia, will be republished in Autumn 2016. This event will include a reading from Nicolas book and will be followed by a Q&A session with Nicola. Over the Rainbow is a detailed political analysis of the material roots of homophobia in class society. Written at a time when commercialisation of the LGBT+ movement was just beginning to take hold in the UK, the book is an uncompromising critique of those who claimed we could use lifestyle politics and the free market, to buy our way out of discrimination and persecution. Over the Rainbow offers an uncompromising critique of the weakness of identity politics and an irrefutable class analysis of LGBT+ oppression. The book was first published by Pluto Press in 1995 and until now, has been out of print. Nicola is one of the original members of the group Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners, whose story was powerfully portrayed in the hit film Pride. Her book grew from the ferment of struggle in the 1980s and 90s, and contains the first published account of the solidarity LGSM forged with mineworkers during the bitter, year-long strike against the Thatcher governments pit-closure plans. It thus provides a crucial historical and political context to the events depicted in the film. The original book took on, with controversial ferocity, the rise of identity politics in the 1990s. Today, the contradictions are even sharper and the new introduction will address the current scene.
