London on 19 Sep - 17:45 to 20:30
In support of Jeremy Corbyn's campaign to be re-elected leader of the Labour Party, we are showing the 2014 film Pride at the Phoenix Cinema in East Finchley. The film tells the story of Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM), a group who stood in solidarity with coalfield communities during the 1984-5 strike. As well as showing the film, we will have a Q&A with original LGSM activists and special guests. Jeremy has been a long standing supporter of LGBT rights and campaigned tirelessly in support of striking miners. Join us for what will be a great event, to raise funds for the leadership campaign, enjoy a wonderful film, and hear from the people who were there! * The cinema has a number of spaces for wheelchair users. Please email us if you would like to use one of these spaces. Accessibility information for the venue can be found here: http://tinyurl.com/hd68rw4. Set in the summer of 1984 Margaret Thatcher is in power and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is on strike. At the Gay Pride March in London, a group of gay and lesbian activists decides to raise money to support the families of the striking miners. But there is a problem. The Union seems embarrassed to receive their support. But the activists are not deterred. They decide to ignore the Union and go direct to the miners. They identify a mining village in deepest Wales and set off in a mini bus to make their donation in person. And so begins the extraordinary story of two seemingly alien communities who form a surprising and ultimately triumphant partnership.
